What exactly are eco diapers?
Disposable diapers, eco-friendly diapers, designer diapers, certified diapers, non-toxic diapers, premium diapers, eco diapers… At first glance, the world of baby diapers looks like a giant chaotic jungle. But don’t worry—the reality is much simpler! Let’s take a closer look at what eco diapers really are, their benefits, any potential downsides, and what you should keep in mind when choosing them.
Eco diapers are disposable diapers designed to have a lower environmental impact than traditional disposable diapers.
Since the definition is quite broad, there are two key factors that really matter:
- The materials – What is the diaper made of?
- The certification – Has it been tested by independent organizations?
What are eco diapers made of?
Just like regular diapers, eco diapers are mass-produced in factories. They consist of multiple layers and components made from different materials, bonded together using heat—without any glue.
Eco diapers almost always use bioplastics, which come from renewable sources like sugar cane or corn starch. Depending on the manufacturer, they may also contain plant-based fibers like organic cotton. These materials form the base of the diaper—both the inner and outer layers.
The outer layer holds the fastening system (made from bio-based or recycled plastic) and has elastic bands to ensure a snug fit. Instead of natural latex, which is a common allergen, eco diapers use bioplastic. If the diaper has prints or designs, only heavy metal-free, non-toxic dyes are used.
The absorbent core is the heart of the diaper. It must quickly absorb large amounts of liquid and lock it inside securely. Eco diapers typically combine plant-based fiber structures with absorbent materials.
Between the actual absorbent core and the baby’s skin, there’s what we parents love most about eco-diapers – several layers with a “pure” composition.
The diaper should definitely not be bleached with chlorine (look for “TCF – totally chlorine-free”). It should contain no perfumes (not even so-called “skin-friendly” fragrances) and no petroleum-based ingredients like parabens or silicones.
In general: Zero allergens, zero chemicals that could even theoretically penetrate sensitive baby skin or cause irritation.
Why are eco diapers better?
What’s great about eco-diapers is their clean composition, meaning they don’t contain any extra chemicals, and only the truly well-tested parts come into contact with the baby’s skin. Plus, thanks to natural cellulose, they’re fluffier and let the skin breathe better, and the diaper (unlike conventional diapers) doesn’t smell. The baby’s skin stays dry and isn’t burdened with chemicals, heavy metals, chlorine, or potential allergens. Thanks to the soft fabric, it’s not mechanically irritated either. This lowers the risk of skin reactions and diaper rash. And if something does happen (like a reaction to a food ingredient), the diaper doesn’t prevent healing.
Are eco diapers biodegradable?
Eco diapers are definitely more sustainable than conventional ones, but they’re not 100% biodegradable just yet. Even though many components are made from plant-based materials and bioplastics, they don’t fully break down in regular compost. Plus, diapers should never be composted at home because human waste can contain harmful bacteria.
Why are eco diapers more expensive?
The higher price comes down to better quality and eco-friendly production. The materials are more expensive, manufacturing is more complex, and many brands prioritize fair working conditions. For example, Bambe diapers are made locally in the Czech Republic.
Which certifications should you look for?
If you want to make sure you're choosing a truly eco-friendly diaper, check for these certifications:
1. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100
This certificate confirms that the textile materials used in the diapers do not contain harmful chemicals such as pesticides, heavy metals, formaldehyde, or other substances that could be dangerous to the baby’s skin. It is a widely recognized standard in the textile industry.
2. EU Ecolabel
The EU Ecolabel is an official European certification awarded to products that meet strict ecological and environmental requirements.
3. Blauer Engel (The Oldest Eco-Label)
The "Blue Angel" awards a certificate to products that are demonstrably environmentally friendly with minimal environmental impact. The certification process includes very strict testing and regular inspections.
4. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)
The international non-profit organization FSC issues a certificate only to products that meet strict environmental, social, and economic standards. Environmental and social responsibility is a top priority.
5. AllergyCertified
The AllergyCertified label involves a thorough evaluation of all product components, focusing on their impact on skin reactions and potential allergies. A product with this label has passed strict testing in toxicological laboratories.
6. Cotton Enhanced™
The Cotton Enhanced™ trademark guarantees the use of natural, biodegradable cotton, which is hypoallergenic and is the ideal material for the most sensitive baby skin.
7. Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
The GOTS certification means that diapers made from organic materials meet ecological standards throughout the production process. It primarily focuses on ecological and social standards in the textile industry, including products containing organic materials like organic cotton.
8. Certificates for Responsible Production
In addition to testing the specific composition of products, there are several certifications that evaluate the production process itself and its impact on the environment. An example is the CO2 Neutral® certificate (awarded by CO2logic and Vinçotte), which confirms a responsible approach to reducing emissions in production.
Are Bambe diapers real eco diapers?
Absolutely! Bambe diapers have passed multiple strict tests and certifications and continue to be reviewed regularly. You can find a full list of certifications and details about their eco-friendly production process in our Certification article.
